So do people really just go to watch horse racing to gamble? December 31st, 2009 | Horse Racing | 10 Comments »

That is all it seems to me.
One funny incident where I saw this guy bet on every horse. He said that way he is guaranteed to win ( ya no shit). But I always heard its also tradition to bet 2 dollars every time you go as well, this is probably the reason for being able to get a ton of 2 dollar bills at horse racing tracks.

Well I am just wondering.

Later.

unless you are related to the horse racing industry you generall yonly go to the track to bet, two bucks is a usual bet, such as two on a horse to win a two dollar trifecta, etc

Horse Gambling Online Worldwide December 31st, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

What is the main benefit of horse gambling online? This can be a somewhat of a difficult question to answer because there are many benefits to taking part in such a wagering venture. However, if one were to point out a single, specific benefit to horse gambling online it would probably be the choice involved. If you were to peruse the sheer volume of racetracks throughout the world, you will notice that the number of venues to take part in horse gambling online is quite vast. This opens the door for many more opportunities than previously imagined to win big at the tracks.

Some may wonder why choice is so important. Are not all racetracks the same at least in theory? Why would someone living in New York City want to place a wager on a horse race in Australia? The answer to these two questions is rather simple. The first answer is that each and every racetrack is unique and the reason someone in NYC would place a bet in the Pacific Rim would be to win a lot of money with horse gambling online!

In all seriousness, the more choices you have the greater the odds will be that you select a track and race that will deliver a win for you. That is why one should never overlook the huge positive of the availability to place such horse bets all over the world. Some races may turn out to be a better selection than others which is why such tremendous choice is a positive.

The various racetracks are different and different horses can perform better in certain situations than others. This is why the choice and availability present through wagering on horse races throughout the world is a huge plus. Those seriously interested in horse gambling online seriously need to look into such options.

The Importance of Horse Betting Rules December 30th, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

If you are just starting out with horse betting, you will definitely want to learn the rules associated with betting. There are several very important rules that all players must learn. Some ruled differ somewhat between the rules at a race and the rules of online horse racing, however for the most part the general horse betting rules are usually the same. Most online horse racing venues use the “Las Vegas Rules” to determine how the game is played and who the winner is.

One of the most important horse betting rules that you will encounter online is when to bet, many people assume they can bet anytime, however in most cases if you don’t have your bet in by one minute until the race, you are not betting on the race. If you do get your bet in on time that means you have an active bet. In most cases sites like Sportsbook.com will allow players to make bets by telephone, in person or online. There are several kinds of bets you can make and in some cases a savvy player may bet several different combinations.

In order to learn to follow the horse betting rules, a person must first learn how to make the bets in a horse race. You can bet that the horse of your choice will “win” by being the first to cross the finish line. You can bet that it will “show” which means that your horse will come in first, second or third in the race. You can also bet that your horse will “place” or come in first or second. You may also bet a combination which is two to four horses will come in the order that you specify. There are many other betting arrangements that you will be able to use, knowing the horse betting rules will help you to make the best bet to make the most money.

Horse Racing - Welsh National Preview December 29th, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

The way the weather has been recently means we may be looking at a postponed Welsh National, but fingers crossed the temperatures begin to rise for what is one of the best handicaps of the season for spread bettors. Last year’s winner, Notre Pere, was something of a shock and became the first Irish trained horse ever to win this marathon slog. The race is traditionally run on very soft ground which often results in the Sporting Index traders pricing up monster winning distance spreads. One of the most famous wide distance victories was that of Carvill’s Hill in 1991, who produced a sensational performance to beat subsequent Grand National winner Party Politics by 20 lengths conceding 19lbs. He was a nine-year-old, but spread bettors will be interested to learn that all of the last five winners have been six or seven.

Top weights don’t find it easy to win this race and only two of the last ten winners have carried 11stone or more; although they have come in two of the last three years. Halcon Generlardais is going for his second Welsh National and those spread punters playing him on the win index will point to his fantastic record at this track with form figures reading 321 – all in this race. He is a few pounds lower than last year as well so is sure to attract support on the day.

Le Beau Bai is almost certain to go off favourite following his 21 length victory here last month. However, the ground needs to be bottomless for this six-year-old and his supporters on the spreads will be praying for the heavens to open – with rain, not snow. The Welsh National has been a decent trial for the big one at Aintree in recent years – two of the last six winners have doubled up at Liverpool and last year’s well beaten 9/2 favourite Mon Mome, of course, went on to win the Grand National in April at 100/1.

Buyers of SPs with Sporting Index will take encouragement from the fact that only one favourite has been successful in the past decade, but it doesn’t normally go to a massive priced outsider either. Notre Pere, at 16/1, is the biggest priced winner in the last ten years and everything else has been between 100/30 and 14/1.  For those spread bettors who like to follow certain trainers in these big races, Paul Nicholls and Nigel Twiston-Davies have both won this twice, but neither can emulate David Pipe’s dad, Martin, who won this five times between 1988 and 1993.

The weather will have a big effect on the winning distances spread, but it’s difficult to find any consistent pattern in this race. Notre Pere won by 7 lengths 12 months ago and there have been four winning margins of that or bigger since 1999. L’Aventure, who won this in 2005 for Paul Nicholls, is set to run again this time around and winning distance spread buyers will be hoping for a similar result as she destroyed the field to win by a distance. However, two years ago Miko de Beauchene managed to hold off Halcon Generlardais by just a head.

Check Your Horse Racing Schedule and Wager Online Today! December 24th, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

If you have ever visited a horse racing track, you likely came away with an understanding of why horse racing is known as “The Sport of Kings.” Celebrities and sports figures such as Peyton Manning, Michael Jordan and even the elegant Queen of England have checked the horse racing schedule and have added The Kentucky Derby to their annual calendar of events. Wouldn’t you like to be a part of the action?

Well, thanks to the introduction of online sportsbooks such as www.sportsbook.com and others, you can check an online horse racing schedule and enjoy the excitement of racing from your own home by placing wagers online using your computer. Sportsbook.com and other similar sites enable you to wager on horse racing tracks across the globe even when the horse racing schedules at your local tracks indicate that there is no live racing. In addition to the opportunity to win lots of money, there are many advantages to wagering online. For instance, by placing a bet online, you do not have to pay for gasoline or the price of admission to a horse racing track, and you do not have to wait in a long line to place your bet. Best of all, you do not have to worry about finding time to follow the live horse raching schedule because you can wager from home. Oh, and you do not have to worry about misplacing any winning tickets.

While some people are drawn to horse racing because of the excitement of a live race and the beauty of horses, others are attracted to the sport because it is possible to win thousands of dollars by placing just a two dollar bet. Few other sports offer the fantastic odds and potential payouts that horse racing does. As a long time fan of horse racing, I encourage you to check the horse racing schedule and make a few bets online. Setting up an account is easy and takes only a few minutes. A Brief History of Horse Racing and the Traditionof betting December 24th, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

The first recorded and now legendary race took place in Ireland from Buttevant Church to St. Marys Church, Doneraile, in Cork in 1752.

The riders raced from the steeple at one church to the steeple at another church, giving rise to the term Steeple Chasing.

During the 19th Century, steeple chasing became more sophisticated with enclosed courses and professionally trained horses and the traditional amateur was unable to compete at this level.

Other attempts were made to stage races for amateurs, from which professionals were excluded. Local Hunts undertook to organise amateur races and the Atherstone Hunt was the first hunt to organise a meeting annually from 1870. This hunt still has a meeting today usually at the end of each April.

There were no accepted rules for these races until 1913, when the Master of Hounds Point to Point Association formulated a list.

In 1935, Point to Point racing was brought under the umbrella of the National Hunt Committee which runs professional jump racing, who formalised a new set of regulations which generally still stand today.

Point to pointing has often led the way for National Hunt racing to follow:

As point to point fences are six inches lower than National Hunt fences, many of the top horses like ‘Best Mate’ and ‘Denman’ began their careers in point to points. It is an invaluable training ground for young horses and riders.

Each year there is a limited number of races at National Hunt courses between February and May that are confined to point to pointers.

They differ from normal races as the horses are not handicapped by weight in order to equalize their abilities - so the best horses tend to win.

These are good betting opportunities but you need to have considerable knowledge about point to point form.

How Do They Come Up With Horse Racing Odds? December 22nd, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

Playing the ponies pivots entirely on what odds each horse has. The horse racing odds determine whether the bet is worth making or how much you can make should that horse win. But how does each track come up with horse racing odds?

Meet the Track Handicapper

Horse racing odds are often determined entirely by the tracks’ handicapper, who sometimes also doubles as the track announcer. The final decision for an individual horse’s odds is determined by one human brain. He or she estimates that if, somehow, the same race could be run with the same horses under the exact same conditions for 10 or 100 times, how many times will the particular horse win. If a horse is 100-1, then the handicapper doesn’t think much of the horse.

The track handicapper has to come up with the original odds (usually called morning line odds) about a week before the race is run. In this way, the horse racing odds for the track’s entire daily card can be sent off in time to local newspapers, online gambling sites and the national horse racing papers.

On The Day

Depending on where you live, you can bet that race as soon as the morning line odds are announced. But many people wait until the day of the race in order to be sure that the horse doesn’t scratch (have to be withdrawn from the race.) Also, many players like to see the how the horse is doing that day before they lay their money down.

As soon as the track opens for the day, you will notice that the odds on the tote board will often change dramatically before the starting gates finally open for the running of the race. The more people buy tickets for a particular horse, the lower the odds become.

Horseracing Handicapping When Enough is Enough and it is Time to Decide December 22nd, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

Whenever you handicap a horse race it all boils down to one thing after all is said and done. You have to decide whether or not to be on the race. It is just that simple, though the judgment required may be quite difficult. The problem is that there is so much information now available, it is hard to know when to quit studying and reading and when to just sit back and make that final decision.

Of course, a lot of that process should involve the odds that are available. Also necessary to the decision making process is an opinion about the race. If you don’t have a pretty strong opinion about the race, then the decision not to bet on the race should be pretty obvious. If you find yourself hemming and hawing and trying to coax a bet out of the race, the best move may be to literally turn the page and move on to the next race.

While that seems like a simple matter, there are days when we all seem to be in a mood to try to squeeze a bet out of every race we look at. That can be a dangerous condition. Dangerous to your bankroll and self esteem. Nothing is as deflating to the ego as making a lot of bets that you look at the day after and ask yourself what in the world you were thinking.

You can really get disgusted with yourself and your lack of self control, so maybe you need to be a little more demanding of the races and less so of yourself. It is a good habit to expect a race to present some pretty clear factors that stand out and if the event doesn’t shape up that way, it is alright to just get disgusted with the race, or even blame the racing secretary if it helps, and then say, “Enough is enough.”

That’s when you turn the page and move on. Just remember this, there will always be more races and more chances to wager. You don’t have to force anything and when you feel the strongest urge to bet, that may well be the time to go fishing and bet on what the fish might be biting on, because people who really want to bet, no matter how the race shapes up, just want to gamble and that is a lot different than handicapping a race and getting fair value odds.

The most consistent horse racing systems have to have the basics and a handicapper must understand the basics. I have been around horse racing for 50 years including as an owner. Without the basics the rest is not going to do any good. If you want to learn how a horse owner and insider handicaps just go to http://williewins.homestead.com/truecb.html and get the truth.

Horses Entered in a Race for Main Track Only Indicate Trainer Intent December 21st, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

Sooner or later, when you are handicapping horse races and trying to make money betting on the horses, you realize that you spend a lot of your time handicapping the people, not just the horses. The truth of the matter is that the people, that is the jockey, trainer, and owner, have as much to do with the horse winning as the horse itself. For instance, if the trainer decides, for whatever reason, that the horse isn’t ready to win and shouldn’t be pushed too hard in the race, he or she may tell the rider to just take it easy and give it some exercise.

While the owner may be aware of that fact and perhaps some of the people on the backstretch, the betting public is unaware of it and may even make the horse the favorite. So figuring out trainer intent becomes a very big part of handicapping a race if you really are serious about winning money. You have several choices in this matter of reading trainer’s minds.

First of all, you can learn as much as you can about training race horses so you will understand why a trainer is doing what he or she is doing. Secondly, you can learn to track smart money. While the smart money doesn’t always win, it wins often enough to stay ahead in a very difficult game. That is why it really is smart money.

There are, however, occasions when a trainer’s intentions are not only obvious, but can point out a good bet. The place to look for some of these obvious calls is in turf races. When you see a horse entered in a turf race and the words, “Main Track Only, of MTO,” are beside the horse’s name, that means the owner has entered the runner only if the race is taken off the turf and run on dirt.

The trainer knows that the horse is only likely to win or be competitive if it runs on the dirt. If all the conditioner wanted to do was to exercise the horse to get it in shape, as many trainers do, he or she wouldn’t mind running it over the grass. But when you see that a horse is entered in a turf race but only to be run over the main track, it is a strong indication that the trainer will tell the rider to try for the win if given the chance. It isn’t a guarantee of a win, there is no such thing in horseracing, but it does mean that if you bet on the horse, at least you know that the rider will be trying to get it into the winner’s circle and that is a big part of the handicapping puzzle.

Easy Horse Racing Winners Based on Just One Handicapping Factor December 20th, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

Finding a good bet in a horse race isn’t usually easy, but sometimes, if you know which races are easier to handicap, you can find the right horse to bet on. Some races are tougher than others to handicap for different reasons. The first and most obvious problem is the size of the field. The more horses in the race, the more time it takes to handicap the race and the more chances of missing an important fact about one runner that may be the winner.

The larger the field, the more the money is spread around and the better then possibility of getting good odds on one of the horses, however, so don’t discount races solely on the basis of field size. If you are serious about making a profit from your bets and working at it, though, you do realize that your time spent handicapping is an investment and investing too much time in one race will keep you from handicapping another that might have a good bet. Learning to budget time and find the right size fields is part of the process of becoming a good and profitable handicapper.

The next question when trying to find an easy race to handicap is how many unknowns are there that will have you scratching your head and agonizing over your bets? The more things that you can’t quantify, such as a horse racing at a distance it never tried or on a surface it never tried, the more likely it is that you will make a mistake in your judgment. While handicapping a race requires a lot of judgment, the best chances you have are when you can find a race with just a few critical decisions in it.

That means that the winner will have to have an attribute or factor in its favor that makes it a likely winner when compared to the other horses. If there is a very strong post position bias, that may help. Over the years, however, I have found that running style, particularly in races for younger less experienced horses, stands out as the one handicapping factor that can determine the race.

For instance, at many tracks you will find that sprints for 2 year olds are almost always won by a horse within a length of the leader or in the lead at the half mile call. Early speed often dominates in short races for younger horses. You can buy track models that will show you what running styles win and how close to the lead a winner usually runs in each type of race. Some past performances even include them now.

By rating the speed of each horse, you can often eliminate almost the entire field and narrow your search down to two or sometimes just one horse. Once you know which horses have a big edge, the next step is to check the odds and see which one gives the best value depending upon how much early speed it possesses, how much experience it has, and how skilled the connections are at finding the winners circle.

When to Bet on the Favorite in a Horse Race December 19th, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

The favorite in a horse race is the horse with the most money wagered on it to win, therefore, the horse with the lowest odds. Favorites win an average of about a third of the time, or perhaps slightly less. If you just want the thrill of watching a horse that you have bet on win a race, then betting the favorite in each race is probably what you should do.

On the other hand, that thrill will cost you money over the long run because, though they win often, the favorite is usually a bad bet. Any horse that wins a third of the time, or once in three races, would have to pay an average of $6 for every $2 wagered on it to win. Favorites average less than $6 to win so you slowly lose your bankroll.

When some people start attending the races and catch onto the favorite angle, they often come up with the less than original idea that if they can just figure out which favorites are good bets and which ones won’t win, then they will be able to make money. While the theory is sound, doing that is much more difficult than it appears.

Trying to eliminate favorites that are going to disappoint can be some pretty tough sledding most of the time. I say most of the time because there is one situation that does offer some promise. Occasionally, a runner is made the favorite in a race despite the fact that the horse has never done what is being asked of it. For instance, perhaps a young horse is being asked to race over a mile, called a route race, when the best it has done to date is to win a sprint race (under a mile).

Such a horse is still unproven at that distance. Never mind what the breeding indicates or how heavily the horse is backed in the win pool, it is still an unknown as to whether it can handle the distance. When you find a favorite that is being asked to win at a distance it has never won at, or over a surface it has never tried, then you may have a false favorite. I am not, however, talking about maiden races.

If you are betting favorites and looking for a type of favorite to eliminate, then this is definitely the one to consider. You may, by eliminating this bad bet, be able to eke out a slight profit on your bets, but it will be tight.

The Secret of Successful Horse Racing Handicapping is Finding a Good Bet December 18th, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

The problem with trying to make money horse racing handicapping is that a lot of people are doing the same thing and some of them are quite sharp, others have inside information, and a few are both sharp and have that information. Beating the crowd with your bets isn’t easy. Whatever past performances, speed ratings, handicapping angles you have are available to the rest of the betting public.

Some people think the secret is to pick winners and that if he or she can just pick enough winners then he or she will make a profit. That just isn’t the case. It takes more than good horse picking to win money consistently. You have to pick winners that pay more than the public thinks they are worth. In other words, if the public, the people you are trying to beat, think a horse will win one third of its races and therefore bet it down to 2-1, it is only a good bet if it will actually win more than a third of the time. Otherwise, at best, it is a break even bet.

While you may like horses and racing and the whole challenge of handicapping races, what you are really doing is mathematics. If you are serious about making money betting on horses then you have to be able to do the math to know when the probability of a horse winning justifies the odds and payout. In the example above of the horse at 2-1, if you know that type of horse wins 45% of its races, it is a good bet.

Obviously, the next question is, “How do I know the probability of a horse winning a race?”

That is the key to making money betting horses. Just that one factor or secret or statistic, call it what you will, is the whole game. So now that you know what you are looking for, here are some tips on how to figure it out. First of all, all races are not alike. Some are won by front runners, others are won by closers, and still others by tactical speed. You need to know how each horses many factors, speed, style, connections, form, all contribute to its chances of beating the others.

In order to do that you need to concentrate on one or two tracks at the most and learn those tracks and what makes a winner. You do that by keeping records of which horses won and how they won. Yes, you can buy track models and other information, and that will help to shorten the time it takes to start winning, but you still need to learn how each factor is weighted.

In the end, it is practice and note keeping that will make you successful at finding good bets. The only good bet is one with a profitable outcome, all others are sucker bets. If you are serious about wining, learn the art and practice keeping notes so you know what wins a $10,000 claimer for older horses at your track, or what wins a 3 year old fillies race over the 6 furlong course. Then, when the right bet comes along, you’ll know it and make money on it. You will also have to learn to sit races out. Good bets do come along, but they don’t happen in every race.

Gambling in general is an awfully bad behavior. The casino has an edge at just about every form of gambling on their floors. For every one winner who screams at the top of his lungs about the $1,000 jackpot he hits, there are hundreds of other poor fellows who drained their hard-earned money on wasteful gaming.

There is, however, one form of gambling where an informed player can dig up his own goldmine in a sea of hazards. You won’t find any professional slots players, roulette specialists, or craps masters, but as a doctor of statistics who fired his own boss–I’m living proof that a sharp sports bettor can not only win in gambling, he can walk away with over $50,000 every week, and repeat it again and again without ever spending more than 5 minutes a day!

GameKeeper Turns Poacher - A Review December 16th, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

Gamekeeper Turns Poacher the latest offering from Sportsworld Publishing is the brainchild of Mark Layton, Like Prize Lay before it this system is a winner of the Racing Investors Club £1000 tipping competition. To win the £1000 a system has to have had four successive profitable months of proofed winning results.
Mark has spent over 20 years as a Systems Analyst and software engineer for a major bookmaker. This has made him ideally placed to develop a database of information to help him with his betting strategy. Having now retired from work he concentrates on trading on the exchanges using the systems that he has developed over the years with great success. Gamekeeper Turned Poacher is one of his most successful systems.
What impressed me was the fact that no outlandish claims were made for this system. The results of the four months of the Racing Investors Club show a steady if not spectacular month o month profit.
Month 1 Profit = 10.62 Points
Month 2 Profit = 15.53 Points
Month 3 Profit = 12.44 Points
Month 4 Profit = 13.47 Points
They also make an unusual claim in the advertising that you will win 4 times the amount you lose on the system. In other words you will make £41.80 for every £10 you lose. A strange but impressive statistic that makes me think that I will be adding it to my own portfolio soon.
As for the system itself it is designed for lay bets on horses price between 5/2 and 11/2. There are a series of filters that need to be applied but they are all fairly straight forward and simple to apply. Mark has been operating this particular system for the last 5 years and claims never to have had a losing month. Over the years he has improved the Gamekeeper Turns Poacher by making minor modifications to bring it to its present state.
Prior to the RIC competition Mark was recording 82% strike rate with a profit over the 5 years of 1245 points and the average losing SP was 3.65-1. By anyones standards these are good figures. Purchasers of Gamekeeper Turns Poacher will also receive a 2nd system from Mark which produces a strike rate of nearly 90%.
As with any new system we have to take the past results on trust but knowing the reputation of both the developer and publishers I have no reason to doubt them. I am even more encouraged by the fact that since the 24th November the system has generated 33 consecutive winning bets. In my opinion Gamekeeper Turn s Poacher is going to prove a very successful and profitable system.

How to bet on horse racing December 15th, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

Many people have made the mistake of thinking that they can make money on horse race betting by simply putting their money on a horse enough times. Most of these people wind up loosing a good deal of money in the process. It is very easy to get caught up in the excitement of the race and go for a long shot to win since the payout will be greater and it feels exciting. The problem with placing bets this way is that those horses seldom ever win and usually the better looses their money.

The first thing to keep in mind when horse race betting is to go in with a strategy. As boring as it sounds the people who win the most are the same people who do their homework. This means researching the individual horses in the race. Always betting on the favorite is not going to get a big win, but neither will loosing money by always betting on a long shot. By researching beforehand you will be able to start to see patterns in how the horses race and what you can expect to see out of them.

The next thing to remember is to know how to control yourself. No one can maintain a winning streak forever. It is very important to remember that being able to walk away is the most important part of placing any type of a bet. Even though horse race betting is exciting, it can become a problem just like anything else when it is done excessively. Horse race betting can be a great deal of fun for anyone who is willing to invest the time to do their research and keep control of themselves even when it seems like they can’t loose. By taking these simple steps horse race betting is sure to become a hobby that you will enjoy and even make some extra money from.

Horse Racing Handicapping Tip Number 5 Second Favorites Create Place Bet Overlays December 15th, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

Horse racing handicapping is a tough way to make money but some people do manage to eke out a profit.  Sometimes you have to think out of the box, however, if you want to make money.  While the majority of people bet to win or play the exotic bets, the place and show pools often go unnoticed by most horse players.  Yet there they are race after race and thousands are poured into those pools.

Who is betting place and show and why?  It has been proven that there are overlays in those pools that can be profitable, though not so glamorous bets.  One thing I look for when deciding if there is room in the place pool for a good bet is a second favorite that is being hammered in the place pools.

It happens almost every day at almost every track, but not in every race.  If you watch the place pool amounts, however, you will find that in some races, the second favorite is getting a disproportionate amount of the place money.  The situation usually occurs in a race where the favorite appears very strong and there is another horse that seems much better than the rest of the field, but not on a par with the top horse.

When you see that one horse is getting lot of place money, that is a red flag, or perhaps a green one, because it means that there may be a good place bet in the race.  While the second favorite may be a good horse and have a good shot of being second or perhaps even upsetting the favorite, if it is bet down in the place pool, it may still be a poor place bet and that means that another contender for the place spot is being under bet, making it a good place bet.

As odd as it may first appear, the favorite may actually become a good place bet if the second favorite is overrated.  If the second favorite fails to at least place and the favorite wins, all that money that was wagered on the second favorite in the place pool will be divided between the backers of the favorite and whichever horse manages to come in second.  This is a horse racing angle that often is often over looked.

When you handicap the race, look at the top contenders and see how much is bet to place on each one.  You will have to wait until post time to be sure that one or more of them is being over looked in the place pools, but you will often find a good place bet if you are patient can really identify contenders who may place.

Horseracing Handicapping Do Less Accomplish More by Tracking Your Bets December 14th, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

Are you keeping track of your bets to measure the effectiveness of your horseracing handicapping decisions?  Making money by betting on horses is a tough game and doing the amount of research and daily reading that it takes to be successful can be very time consuming.  If you’re not careful, all the work will soon take any of the fun out of it and your passion will become drudgery.

One phrase that may help you to get a handle on all this work and no play is, “Do less but accomplish more.”

While that may seem like double speak at first, it really makes sense.  Sometimes, when trying to cover all the horseracing angles, we just try to do too much.  But knowing which things to leave on our list of things to do and which things to purge from that list is difficult.  A good horse handicapper just doesn’t want to miss anything because as we all know, just missing one factor or bit of information can be the difference between a good day and a bad day.

While having one more thing to do may seem like the straw that broke the camel’s back, keeping notes about your bets and writing down why you chose to bet or pass the bet is very important.  If, for instance, you find that you based your opinion on speed or at least it was the most important factor in your final decision, in 20 races in the past two weeks and you lost money on those bets, then it is time to determine if you should spend less time and effort handicapping speed.

Perhaps you should spend less time compiling or reading speed figures or maybe you should drop them altogether.  An interesting bi-product of this note keeping and self searching is that you will also soon find which factors are most important at the track and in the kinds of races you are playing.  That is also very important for obvious reasons.

As challenging as horseracing handicapping may be and making money betting on horses may be, it isn’t impossible, just a lot of hard work.  Keeping notes and using them to weed out useless activities is one way to work smarter, not harder.

Horse Racing Handicapping Tips Using the Day of the Week to Follow the Smart Money December 13th, 2009 | Horse Racing | No Comments »

Are you keeping track of pool totals and using money moves on the toteboard to determine which runners are live?  It is a good way to know which horses in the race will be sent and which ones are out for a little breeze.  By that I mean which riders will be trying to win with their horses and which ones have instructions to only exercise their horses.  If you think that every horse in a horse race is being sent out to win, then you don’t know much about the business of owning and training horses.

While there can be many reasons for not trying to win, or at least not pushing a horse too hard, when a horse is being “sent” to win, the stable will usually put some money on it.  There are ways to check this on the tote board.  Betting against the smart money is one way to go broke betting on horses.

Believe it or not, it does make a difference as to which day of the week you play the horses as far as playing against the smart money goes.  Just ask yourself this question, which day(s) of the week do many people attend the track for recreation and which days of the week are likely to have a higher percentage of the in crowd, the owners and trainers and backstretch denizens around?

Obviously, Saturday and holidays are the days when many people go to the track just for fun.  They have no inside information and therefore, they are betting based on what they read in the program, horses touted by the public handicappers, or even lucky numbers.  To put it bluntly, the recreational players are not a very savvy crowd.  They pour money into the pools and blindly bet against the owners and trainers who know whether or not their horse really has a chance to win.

When the crowd is the smallest, then the inside money is a bigger percentage of the total pool.  It is much easier to see imbalances and percentages that show you when a horse is well meant.  If you handicap a race and figure a horse should be at 5-1 and it is at 5-2 at post time, you know that there is some serious inside money, that is smart money, wagered on the horse and there is a reason fro that.

I am not advocating that you only go to the track or bet on horses when the crowd is small, but I am advising you to pay particular attention to inconsistencies in the odds on those days.  You may find some good bets or also lay off some horses who are not meant to win that day just by watching the money.
