Five Horse Race Handicapping Tips To Think About October 18th, 2009

#1. - Focus on races with smaller fields. It’s usually easier to find the winner of a five horse field than it is to find the winner of a twelve horse field. Think about it. The natrual odds of selecting the winner in a five horse field are 4/1. In a twelve horse field you’re looking at natural odds of 11/1. On top of that, the time spent handicapping a five horse field should be much less than the time you would spend handicapping a twelve horse field.

#2. - Pay special attention to horses that show a Big Win in their last race. When a horse is able to come from just off the pace and then draw away in the stretch to win by four lengths or more, they often perform well in their next start, even if they appear to be moving up in class.

#3. - Avoid backing horses that won their last race in allowance or stakes company that are now running for a claiming price. If the purse value of the claiming race they’re running for today is far less than the purse value of the allowance or stakes race they just won, ask yourself, Why are the owners willing to risk losing this horse if it is capable of winning against better company?

#4. - If you can, watch the replay races of horses that show trouble lines with comments such as “checked”, “steadied”, “lacked room”, “bobbled start”, “stumbled start”, “broke slowly”, etc. You will find it helps improve your handicapping. Race replays are available from many websites, including: RaceReplays.com, Twinspires.com, XpressBet.com, YouBet.com, and others.

#5. - If you find a horse that normally runs in route races returning from a long layoff (at the same or higher class level) in a sprint race, check back races to see if this horse has sprinted well in the past. However, if the horse is dropping in class after a long layoff, it’s usually not a good sign.
